Flex N Gate was using a numerically programmed robot to place metal clips on clip towers of plastic panels as large as 180cm x 90cm that cover the interior of the cars. However, due to thermal variations and many other factors, those panels presented variance in geometry and location of the clip towers. These variations were large enough to cause the blind robot to miss or even break the clip towers 20% of the times.

With 3 pairs of off-the-shelf 2D cameras, our product, Apera Vue, gains full view of the 180cm x 90cm panel. Using our 4D Vision technology, Apera Vue finds the clip towers and relays their position with submillimeter accuracy to the robot controller. Now the vision enabled robot can adapt to variable positions of the clip towers and place the clips correctly every single time.
